- The tournament was first held in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Championship.
- The name was changed to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2005.

- Twelve different nations have won the title, with Argentina being the most successful team with six titles.
- Brazil has won five titles, while Portugal, Nigeria, Spain, and Uruguay have each won two titles.
